Research

The Fire Research Division at NIST conducted a series of fire experiments to demonstrate how a watered Christmas tree may be less of a fire hazard than a dry one.

Conclusive

Christmas tree that was maintained in a stand kept filled with water prior to testing (WATERED) did not ignite when exposed to the same ignition source as the tree that was not watered (DRY).

A live Christmas tree burn conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows just how quickly a dried out Christmas tree fire burns, with flashover occurring in less than one minute, as compared to a well-watered tree, which burns at a much slower rate.

A house fire, most likely sparked by faulty Christmas tree lights, envelopes a living room in a shocking 46 seconds.

Monterey County Fire Investigator's Association, with association from NIST, provides Christmas tree safety tips to protect you and your family. A rapidly burning Christmas tree is shown in a living room façade as an example of how dangerous a dry Christmas tree can be if it catches fire.

A demonstration showing how flammable a dry Christmas tree can be as opposed to a tree watered regularly. This test was conducted by the National Fire Protection Association and Underwriters Laboratories.

This contained burn was set up by authorities in Florida to demonstrate just how a quickly a little flicker can turn into a holiday inferno. To guard against this, Christmas trees should be watered daily and disposed of after the holiday season. And as always, make sure your smoke detectors are working properly.
